The lively village of Montpeyroux, with it's romantic, ruined chateau, highly regarded wine and weekly Thursday morning market is the perfect base for exploring the region. The centre of the village with a bakery, wine bar, cafe and butchers are all a short walk from the front door. The market town of Gignac, which is 7 kms away, is well serviced with shops and a Saturday morning market, one of the best in the area. The cool, inviting river Herault, which is 5 km away, provides an excellent swimming spot with a natural, pebbly beach and canoe hire. Lake Salagou is a 20 minute drive, with the Mediterranean beaches of Montpellier 35 minutes away.
Part of the charm of Montpeyroux is that it is very unpretentious. It is filled with cobbled streets, narrow alleys, a charming little main square with the inevitable cafe tables spilling around a 13th century castle (Castellas), and a slightly elevanted position which gives it pleasant views of the surrounding scenery.
